Routine maintenance helps increase the lifespan of your tires. However, they will still eventually need to be replaced. We’re addressing our frequently asked questions at Hall Chevrolet Chesapeake to help you care for your Chevy tires and know when it’s time for new ones.

Do I Really Need to Rotate My Tires?

While maintenance isn’t always convenient, rotating your tires is an important part of caring for your vehicle. If you don’t rotate your tires regularly, they will start to wear unevenly. This can decrease performance, cause rapid tire wear, and leave your tires prone to becoming flat.

How Much Tread Do I Need?

There is actually a legal minimum tire tread depth of 2/32 of an inch. However, we recommend that you have at least 4/32 of an inch of tread to ensure that you have adequate traction on the road.

What Is the Quarter Test?

The quarter test is an easy way to see if you have enough tread. Completing the quarter test is easy:

  • Locate the lowest tread on your tire
  • Insert a quarter with the top of Washington’s head pointed downward into the groove
  • If you can still see the top of his head, it’s time to replace your tires

Do I Need New Tires?

While tire maintenance is important, there are still times that a tire replacement is necessary. Watch for these warning signs it’s time for new tires.

  • Your tires are over six years old
  • Your tread is too low
  • Your tires have excessive cracks or bulges
  • Your tire pressure is consistently low or falling
